Tip #13: Protecting Your Membership Site from Being Hacked

Basically, protecting your membership site should be no different than protecting any other type of website.

So why am I writing you this tip…?

Just to remind you to take all the safety measures you can to protect one of the most important assets you have online.

The damage that can be caused to your revenues due to hacking is big:

It can decrease your retention and registration rates, and if you have a monthly subscriptions, the damage can even be more significant.

Here are some tips to help you protect your membership site from being hacked:

  1. Choose a good hosting company that will provide you with good support in case your membership site is hacked and even stop it from happening
  2. Update your plugins on a regular basis
  3. Update your theme on a regular basis
  4. Delete unnecessary themes and plugins – We recommend Delete Multiple Themes plugin (free) for deleting themes at ones
  5. Choose a reliable theme – Free themes are not recommended since many of them usually contain malware
  6. Make sure you have the latest version of WordPress
  7. Backup your membership site on a regular basis depending on how frequently your site is updated with new content (we love Backup Buddy)
  8. Use protection plugins such as Limit Login Attempts
