Basically, optimizing speed for a membership site is no different than optimizing speed for any other type of website.
However, when it comes to membership sites, especially ones that are supposed to generate you monthly reoccurring income, it’s even more crucial.
Having a slow membership site with a terrible loading time will cause members to cancel their subscription, decrease your retention rates and registration rates.
If you want to generate revenues from your membership site for the long run, please read this guide!
Here are 6 tips to help you improve your
1. Choose a Good Theme
Choose a good theme for your membership site. Not all themes are equal and choosing the right theme can help you reduce the time you will need in order to adapt and optimize the theme part that is slowing your website.
Themes that are coded badly, or themes that are using many images throughout their overall design just make the theme “heavier” and make them load slower.
We recommend purchasing themes from ThemeForest.
2. Use Compressed Images
Use images that are compressed and optimized for fast loading, so if, for example: the image size needs to 650×320 make sure you upload an image in these exact dimensions and not a larger one that will be re-sized by WordPress. You can change your site’s images dimensions by going to the WordPress menu > Media.
3. Use a Caching Plugin
Use a caching plugin like W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache or any other similar plugin. Using a caching plugin is highly important and can significantly reduce your site’s loading time since it creates static cache pages for each page that is loaded in order to speed up access to the data.
4. Uninstall Any Unnecessary Plugins
Uninstall any unnecessary plugins you are not using in your membership site.
5. Use Only Well Developed Plugins
It can be quite difficult to implement this tip if you are not a developer or if you don’t have access to the plugin’s code. However, what you can do is look for recommendations about the plugins you are interested in, check when was their latest update and see what other people are writing about it.
6. Choose a Good Hosting Package
Choosing a good hosting package is highly important, and I am not just saying this. Too many of our clients are using cheep hosting packages that are causing too many problems to their sites. Please, if you are planning on making any money from your membership site, I am asking you not to use shared hosting packages or any “WordPress Packages” that some of the hosting companies have invented – DON’T!
You have no idea how many problems it can cause to your website, plus it has a major effect over your site’s speed as well. Though it costs more money, VPS packages are the ones we recommend and cost-effective they will work great!
If you need any specific guidance about choosing a hosting package, we created a special guide to help you choose the right hosting package for your membership site – “Choosing Your Membership Site’s Hosting Service Wisely”
7. Run Speed Performance Test
Run a speed performance test to get a clear picture of how fast your membership site really is. We are using Pingdom tool to run speed tests in every website we own and in our clients websites as well.
